Transport in Tuscany trains & buses

A relatively small region, Tuscany can be easily crossed within just a few hours either by car of public transport. Consisting of just a few main roads crossing the area, most roads are single lane and some of these can become quite steep and curved as you head into the hills of Tuscany.

Depending on where you're heading, you'll find varying provisions of transportation in Tuscany. If you are looking to visit one of the many smaller villages then these are only reachable by car or bike, and occasional by bus. However, bus timetables to these remote areas can be unreliable and are not recommended. Choose car hire in Tuscany and you can access these quaint villages and explore the hills of Tuscany whenever you want. For the more active, grab a few bikes and head up the winding roads into the villages where you'll come across some of the most stunning views over the land below. You'll see the real Tuscany this way and it also makes for a great day of exploration.

If you want to head into the main towns of Tuscany then you have a great choice of transport. Trains run into and out of the train stations of most of the main towns, all of these are in the centre of the town and so there is so no need for parking or walking a fair distance either. This also means you're well placed for all the attractions of that town and you can easily hop onto another train and make your way to the next town. The main station of Firenze Santa Maria Novella is on the Rome-Milan line which connects to Arezzo & Cortona.
Another line connects Florence to Lucca, Pisa & Pisa Airpot. A small secondary line connects Florence to Siena.
If you visit some of the smaller towns on the outskirts of the main areas, you may need to get a bus connection from the train station. You'll also find that travelling by train in Tuscany is fairly inexpensive and so if you don't want to go out of the main areas, train travel is the best option.

Buses can also be a good choice of transport if you don't need to get to any remote areas. There are about 10 bus companies running in the region and many of these head into terminals which are close to the town's train station.

However, if you don't want to rely on public transport and want the freedom to explore as you please then considering bike or car rental. The beautiful scenery of Tuscany has made exploring the area on bike more popular and if you don't have the courage to head out alone, there are many companies which run biking tours throughout the hills of Tuscany.

Obviously, hiring a car is the best way to get to and from whenever you want to be in Tuscany. There are plenty of car hire companies in the area but make sure you rent from a reputable company to ensure your safety. The ease and freedom of car hire is the clear benefit of this mode of transport, but you'll also find out that car hire is fairly inexpensive and companies have plenty of vehicles to choose from. The major roads in Tuscany are well maintained but can become fairly busy, so do be careful and enjoy exploring this fantastic region.
